"Brain tumors can occur in primary or secondary. Means, first appeared in the brain (primary) or in other parts of the body (secondary), and then spread to the brain. Tumors can be benign (slow growing, for example, approximately 10 years or more), or malignant (fast growing and invade other parts of the body, such as in 1-2 years), "said Dr Keith Goh, consultant Neurosurgery at the International Neuro Associates, Novena Medical Centre, Singapore.

Although the clinical symptoms that appear closely related to the location and size of the brain tumor, he said, the most common symptom is a severe headache that gets worse in the morning, which is sometimes accompanied by nausea and vomiting, and visual disturbances such as blurred or double vision.

"Patients may also experience confusion, changes in personality traits, weakness in the arms or legs, slurred, hearing impairment to epilepsy. If any of these symptoms occur, you should immediately consult a doctor for further examination," he added.

How is diagnosis?

The doctor will perform a neurological examination to evaluate the nerves of the brain, vision, hearing, balance, reflexes and motor coordination. Pemeriksaam radiology brain will then be performed, such as CT scan, MRI scan, angiogram, magnetic teresonansi spectroscopy and tomography-single photon emission computerized (single-photon emission computerized PET).

"With the increasing number of patients with brain tumors, it is important to recognize the early symptoms as early as possible and immediately consult a specialist to be sure. Remember, early detection and treatment will bring better results," he concluded.
